Bloggers Uncensored: with Diffusing the Tension
Welcome to this weeks Bloggers Uncensored! If this is your first time reading a BU interview, this is my longest running blog series, and definitely my favourite. This series is a perfect opportunity to read your favourite bloggers' honest and uncensored opinions on real life topics, and to discover new bloggers to follow! This weeks blogger is Diffusing the Tension.
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Jen. I'm a mental health blogger, but first and foremost, I'm a mommy and wife. We've been marries almost 10 years (together almost 15). We have two amazing kids (ages 4.5 and 3). I am a big bookworm (when I can make the time) and my favourite genre is crime/true crime.
Why do you write?
I write because as an introvert it can be hard to express myself verbally. I am constantly second guessing what I am intending to say. Writing gives me the chance to edit and clarify my message better. Also, I enjoy it!
Why did you start blogging?
I started being more open about my journey with bipolar disorder, and people were so kind and receptive. I started my blog in the hopes of spreading my reach and inspiring others.
What do you love about the blogging world/community?
I love how supportive they are. Always willing to leave thoughtful comments, share posts, and offer constructive feedback for the way your site is designed. I've definitely made some friends.
What do you hate about the blogging world/community?
It can be overwhelming to take in all the information! They have so much wisdom to share that trying to learn it all is a bit frustrating to this perfectionist.
In your opinion, who are the most underrated bloggers?
My favourite bloggers are my sister and a couple friends: Allie, Chloe and Amy.
My sister Allie blogs at I Wonder (Christian spirituality)
My friend Chloe runs Nyxie's Nook (mental health)
My friend Amy is hilarious and blogs at Amy Of All Trades (Lifestyle)
What are some hard truths you have learnt in life?
No one is responsible for making you happy except YOU. You cannot rely on spouses or friends or family members. You make the choice to find a way to be happy, and no one can make that choice for you.
What does freedom mean to you?
Freedom is not being trapped by thoughts and life circumstances. It's being able to chase your goals and dreams without being held back by money or unsupportive family or negative thought patterns.
What are your thoughts on mental health and how it's portrayed in today's society?
As someone who lives with mental health issues, I can say that we have certainly come a long way. But we still have a long way to go. We need better education and more funding for research on alternative treatments.
What are your thoughts on feminism and how it's portrayed in today's society?
I think it's great that it is on the rise. But I think the common misconception is that feminists hate men, or want to be better than men. We just want to be equal.
What are your thoughts on 'Love is Love' and how it's portrayed in today's society?
I don't talk too much about politics on my blog, but I am a huge supporter of this movement. I have friends all over the "spectrum," and think people just need to mind their own business, really.
What advice would you give to someone who is fighting a mental illness?
Take it one day at a time. There is no possible way for you to get better overnight, so don't try. Reach out for help, see a doctor, and come up with a treatment plan. Most importantly, stick with it. You can only heal if you want to. And that involves hard work.
What advice would you give to someone who is being bullied or harassed?
Definitely tell an adult or a friend you trust. You risk more by not saying anything than you do by keeping it a secret.
If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?
Hate, plain and simple.
What else do you feel strongly about?
Scott Peterson didn't kill Laci, but that is a story for another day.
Let's end this with some fun 'This or That' questions:
Love or money?
Hmm...I would say money only because you can afford great life experiences that help you improve yourself to open yourself up to love. (Ex. Meeting someone while travelling, etc)
Work hard or play hard?
Little bit of both!
Cups in the cupboard: right side up or upside down?
Right side up.
Chocolate or sex?
Lol there's a toughie!
Plan everything or wing it?
I am a chronic planner, but that also leads to analysis paralysis.
Happiness or money?
Money! Like I said above, then you can afford ways to help make yourself happy. (Better treatment, more leisure time, etc)
. . .
