Bloggers Uncensored: with Suzy The Explorer

Welcome to this weeks Bloggers Uncensored! This is my latest and favourite blog series that I've created. This series is an opportunity to read your favourite bloggers' honest and uncensored opinions on real life topics. This weeks blogger is Suzy The Explorer.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am 34 years old, I have a husband called Sean who you may have seen me mention a lot in my posts. We have been together for 17 years, married for 8 of those years. We have a little Jack Russell called Lady who is a rescue dog that came to live with us 7 years ago.

Other than travelling the world and going on adventures, I love horror films, my favourite genre is zombies, real zombies by the way, not infected like 28 Days Later. They are not zombies.

I love all kinds of music but prefer heavy metal, love a bit of Kom and Slipknot but also like The Wolves, Bowling For Soup, Thunder, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Alter Ridge and other bands like that.

Why do you write?

I have always loved writing. When I was at school, I used to write short stories for my English teacher who would then read them to class. I love writing and half the time it doesn't matter what I write about as long as I can make something.

Why did you start blogging?

I used to review everywhere I went on Trip Advisor, loved doing it but didn't feel like I was really getting anything out of it other than an email once a month saying how many people had read my review. My best mate Simmie said to me about having my own blog, I had a long think about it and last Christmas I started writing my blog posts on Blogger just to see how it went. I had lots of great responses to my writing and started to build up some big numbers so in March I started building up a website and Suzy The Explorer has been growing ever since.

What do you love about the blogging world/community?

I love that everyone is so supportive of each other. No one puts anyone else down, gives great advice and are always there to help each other. It's brilliant.

What do you hate about the blogging world/community?

Nothing really, so far everyone has been great.

In your opinion, who are the most underrated bloggers?

Borderline Backpackers, The Recommender, Highlands 2 Hammocks, and Eat, Sleep, Love Travel. All of them are amazing and has been a massive support to me since I started blogging.

What are some hard truths you have learnt about life?

That people will lie and use you for their own gain and then think nothing of it.

What does freedom mean to you?

Being able to do what I want without having people put restrictions on me.

What are your thoughts on mental health and how it's portrayed in today's society?

About 4 years ago I went through a very hard time and when I finally admitted it to my doctor, I was put onto antidepressants. Although they helped me get my head straight again, I didn't like being happy because of pills so I worked hard with my husband, family, close friends and an awesome therapist to get my life back on track. I have the odd panic attack but I have a great support system to bring me back down. I don't think that there is enough help for people who don't have the strength or support system to find proper help from professionals. I also think that people should be made more aware of how it feels to have a mental health issue, it's not just feeling a bit down, being scared of something or feeling lonely. It's deeper than that and people need to be made aware of that because they don't know how heartbreaking it is when you tell someone what's going on in your head all they have to say is "pick yourself up, get out more, it's not as bad as you think". That just doesn't help at all.

What advice would you give to someone who is fighting a mental illness?

If you don't have someone close to you that you can speak to, please go to your doctor. They will not laugh at you, they won't tell you to get out more, they will help you and if it's something they can't help you with, they will make sure you can contact them. You are not alone.

What advice would you give to someone who is being bullied or harassed?

Stand up to them, bullied are nothing but pathetic excuses for human beings that hate themselves so much that they take it out on other people. If you don't have the confidence to stand up to them yourself, report it. Go to your parents, teacher, boss, police, whoever can help you and make them aware of the situation. No one should be bullied.

If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?

Negativity, the world would be a much better place if all the negativity could just go away. Instead of putting people down, we could build people up. Instead of pointing out the bad things, we should point out the good.

What else do you feel strongly about?

Having the right people around you. When I was trying to get my head straight, one of the first things I did was cute out the toxic people in my life and I felt so much better for it. Toxic people suck the life out of you and no one deserves that. Cut cut cut.

Let's end this with some fun 'This or That' questions:

Love or money?

Work hard or play hard?

Work hard to play hard.

Cups in the cupboard: right side up or upside down?

Upside down.

Chocolate or sex?

Can I have both at the same time?

Plan everything or wing it?

I like to plan, it's a control thing.

Happiness or money?
